Bush Walking
Walking is a great way to experience the unique alpine landscape letting you set your own pace and appreciate the alpine flora, wildlife and breathtaking vistas along the way. There is a wide variety of day and overnight walks in the Alpine National Park and the adjacent Mt Hotham Alpine Resort. The walking season lasts from early November until late May; the area is usually snow covered during the winter and early spring. Here is a short list of popular bush walks;
- The Cobungra Ditch (12.5km one way)
- The Huts Walk (21km circuit)
- Hotham to Dinner Plain Trail (24km return)
- Mt Feathertop and the Razorback
- Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing (Overnight walk)
Extensive maps and notes can be found at this link.
Mountain Biking
Mountain biking around Mt Hotham is one of the best ways to see it. There are many good tracks extending out from Mt Hotham and from Dinner Plain – four wheel drive tracks and fire trails winding through the bush.
Horse riding
Horse riding, fishing and mountain biking excursions let you explore beyond the alpine villages into the heart of the country. Horse riding treks, over one or several days, follow in the path of early high country explorers and are still filled with new discoveries. Dinner Plain Trail Rides are operating through Summer and Autumn throughout the Alpine High Country.
Fly Fishing
As the snow melts, sports anglers take advantage of the well stocked streams which have their origins above the snowline. The challenge of fly-fishing is a peaceful distraction, taking you to some beautiful alpine settings.
Touring
The Great Alpine Road epitomises the saying “take the scenic route”. The road passes through farmland valleys, along winding rivers, through the eucalypt forests of the Alpine National Park then deep into mountain cattleman country, to the lakes and the ocean beyond.
